Curriculum & Learning
Overbrook Early Learning Center uses The Creative Curriculum, a research-based, developmentally appropriate curriculum that follows a unit of study model aligned with the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (CT ELDS).
Learning is driven by children’s interests and guided by intentional teaching. Units of study are carefully planned to support growth across all developmental domains while allowing flexibility to respond to student curiosity, questions, and engagement.
Key learning areas include:
- Social-emotional development
- Early literacy and language development
- Mathematical thinking and problem-solving
- Science exploration and inquiry
- Creative expression through art, music, and movement
- Social studies and community awareness
Student progress is assessed using Teaching Strategies Gold (TSG), an observation-based assessment system aligned with CT ELDS. Teachers document learning through observations, work samples, photographs, and anecdotal notes.
Families receive formal report cards three times per year, with parent-teacher conferences held in November and February. Assessment information is used to guide instruction, support individual student needs, and prepare children for a successful transition to kindergarten.
