🌈 Preschool Learning Focus: Social-Emotional Development & Fundations Literacy 💛📚

In preschool, we support children’s growth in both social-emotional development and early literacy skills. These two areas work together to help children become confident, capable, and ready for kindergarten and beyond.
🧸 Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
We help children learn how to:
  • Recognize and name their feelings 😊😢😡
  • Build friendships and practice kindness 🤝
  • Share, take turns, and solve problems with peers
  • Use calming strategies when emotions feel big 🌬️
  • Develop independence and confidence 🌱
These skills help children feel safe, supported, and successful in school and in relationships.
📚 Fundations Literacy (Early Reading Skills)
We also use Fundations to build strong early literacy foundations. Children are learning:
  • Letter names and sounds 🔤
  • How to recognize and form letters ✏️
  • Listening for beginning sounds in words 🎧
  • Rhyming and word play 🎵
  • Building early awareness of how print works (reading left to right, tracking words) 📖
These skills prepare children for reading and writing in kindergarten.
💡 How You Can Support at Home
You can help your child grow in both areas by:
  • Talking about feelings daily (“How are you feeling today?”) 💛
  • Reading together every day 📚
  • Playing rhyming games and sound games 🔤
  • Pointing out letters in the environment (signs, books, labels)
  • Encouraging kindness and problem-solving during play 🤝

🌼 Family Engagement Spotlight

East Haven Community Needs Assessment

At Overbrook Early Learning Center, your voice matters! 💬
We are inviting all families to complete a quick survey that will help shape the programs and support we offer through our Family Resource Center (FRC) and Early Start.
📲 Take the Survey Today:
Scan the QR code on our flyer or use the link provided.
Why it matters:
• Your responses are anonymous
• There are no right or wrong answers
• Your feedback directly impacts the services we provide to families
💡 We’ll be sharing this in multiple ways:
• During programs and conversations
• Sent home with families
• Posted here on ParentSquare
• Shared on social media
If you attend any of our events, you’ll also see the flyer available—feel free to scan and complete it right there!
📝 We’re Listening:
As you share your thoughts, we are also gathering feedback and listening closely to what families are saying. Your ideas, needs, and even short comments help guide our next steps.
❤️ Thank you for helping us build a stronger community for children and families!
